Weed Measurements

Since the legalization of Cannabis in Canada, there are tonnes of Canadians trying cannabis for the first time and there is always misconceptions among regular weed smokers of what weed measurements actually are and how the slang is defined.

As I’m sure you are aware, cannabis is bought and sold by weight and even the smallest amount of cannabis is considered to be precious. Users throughout history have broken it down by metric and imperial scale that leads to lots of confusion because both systems are used for weed measurements in Canada.

Canadian law also has a role to play, the Cannabis Act allows us to legally carry and share up to 30 grams of cannabis on you at any given time, and you can have more at home, you can even fly domestically with cannabis. But, be careful, each province is allowed to set its own regulations when it comes to how much cannabis you can legally have at home.  You wouldn’t want to get into trouble with the authorities over a weed measurement mishap., as a result, it’s important to know how much weed you have, as well as what each measurement represents. Read more about cannabis regulations at the bottom of this article.

The top weed measurements in question are:

Each weed measurement is described in more detail below.

How much is a gram of weed?

How much is a gram of weed? = 1 small bud

When it comes to weed measurements, a gram of weed is more or less the lowest possible amount you can purchase, sometimes dispensaries or cannabis stores will sell half grams (nickel bag) depending on where you live in Canada and the demographics.

When people ask how much is a gram of weed, it’s always best to visualize it, a gram of weed is about the size of a small bud and will get you about 2 joints on average, 3 if you prefer smaller joints.

How much does a gram of weed cost?

A gram of weed costs usually between $7 – $12 in most provinces but can vary significantly depending on where you buy your weed and what grade of weed you prefer (AA, AAA, AAAA+). For example, if you buy weed online, then the prices can range from $3 to $12 per gram.

What is a dime bag?

You may have heard of this slang term before the days of legalization on the streets or during a session with your friends. A dime bag is equal to one gram of weed in most cases. Alternatively, a dime bag could be $10 worth of weed that might not necessarily be 1 gram, it depends on the quality of weed, for example, you might get less than a gram if it’s AAAA BC bud.

What is a nickel bag?

The same principle applies to the nickel bag as to the dime bag. A nickel bag is half a gram of weed or $5 worth of weed. Some brick & mortar dispensaries still sell nickel bags that contain bottom of the bag smaller nugs and shake that’s harder to sell, making it a win-win option for value-minded shoppers and dispensary business owners alike.

What is a dub sack?

Weed measurements and weed slang can be confusing but don’t worry, after getting through this article, you will have the lingo down.  A dub sack is commonly referred to as being $20 worth of weed, it’s not a very common term used in Canada anymore. The term “dub” was originally coined in the USA to describe 20-inch rims. Again, the amount of weed you get varies depending on the quality, you’ll probably get anywhere from 1-3 grams.

How much is an eighth of weed?

How much is an eighth? = 3.5 grams

The next increment for purchase is what’s commonly referred to as “an eighth” in Canada. This is where the metric system to the imperial system start to mix. An eighth (one-eighth of an ounce) equals to 3.5 grams of weed.

When people ask how much is an eighth of weed, they generally want to know how much an eighth costs and how much marijuana does it include. The picture shows how much weed you will get in an eighth, and you can expect to pay between $25 to $40 for an eighth of weed, depending on the quality and where you buy it. It’s always cheaper to buy weed online from dispensaries compared to brick and mortar dispensaries, plus you will get a much better selection online.

If you are buying weed from our new recreational cannabis stores, either online or curbside, then you will notice that weed is available by the gram, 3.5 grams, 7 grams, and 15 grams from most provinces and the maximum you can buy at one time is 30 grams, making the ounce (28 grams) variant out of whack, I think Canada did this just to confuse everyone.

How many grams in a quarter?

There are 7 grams in a quarter of weed, or a quarter ounce of weed. When asking how many grams in a quarter of weed you are using slang and referring to portions of an ounce (28-grams). Buying a quarter of weed in Canada is still common and is offered pretty much anywhere you buy marijuana.

How much is a quarter of weed?

When buying a quarter of weed, or 7 grams, you can expect to pay between $40 – $60 again depending on the quality of the weed and where you buy it.

How many grams in a half ounce of weed?

What is a Half?

At this point, the flow of things should be transparent. A half ounce equals 2 quarters, there are 14 grams in a half ounce of weed. A “Half ” is slang for a half ounce of weed and some places even call it a “Half O”.

How many grams in an ounce (OZ)?

How many grams in an ounce? = 28 grams

An ounce (OZ) of weed isn’t a slang term and equals 28 grams or equalling to 4 quarters or 8 eighths using the imperial scale. When people ask how grams in an ounce, it’s hard to visualize it, it’s enough to fill a regular size mason jar or Ziploc bag.

Ounces of weed in Canada is one of the most common weed measurements for bulk weed and wholesale weed. If you are dealing in anything more than 3 ounces, then the weed lingo starts and people start talking in quarter pounds (QPs), half pounds, and pounds of weed and some just use ounces straight up and refer to a pound of weed to 16 ounces.

What is a “full O” and a “Z”?

As I said, an “Ounce” isn’t a slang term, but the terms “Full O” and “Z” are without doubt slang terms. A Full O (or just O) and a Z refer to a full ounce (28 grams) of cannabis.

“Full O” is self-explanatory (short for full ounce), but you may be wondering where the term “Z” came from. As with most cannabis slang, the exact origins of the word are lost in a dank haze of time.

Most long-time stoners agree, that the term “Z” was used as a code so they didn’t have to say “ounce” directly out loud. “Why couldn’t they say ounce?” you ask. Well because not so long ago, cannabis was considered an illicit drug and lumped together with the likes of heroin and cocaine, which were sold in increments that included the ounce. So, if you were overheard asking to buy an ounce, there was a pretty good chance you were looking to score an illegal substance. Hence the need for a code word like “Z.”

What is a QP of weed?

What is a QP of weed? = 1 Quarter Pound, or 4 ounces, or 112 grams

The QP (Quarter Pound) weed measurement is short for 4 ounces, with 28 grams in an ounce, making a QP of weed 112 grams.

One of the reasons people ask what is a QP of weed is because medical marijuana users in Canada are allowed to possess as much weed at home as they like. So they tend to buy their medicine online in bulk at wholesale prices.

How much does a QP of weed cost?

A QP of weed in Canada costs anywhere from $350 to $900. Those prices are entirely based on where you buy your medical marijuana and the grade you buy. I could write a book around the ins and outs on this topic, but in general, to find the best QP deal for medical marijuana, you have to shop around online. And if you are buying weed in bulk and wholesale, then you’re at the right spot with the Chronic Beaver.

How much is a half pound of weed?

A half pound of weed is 8 ounces, that equals to 224 grams in a half pound of weed. Also known as a half-pack or half-pounder, a half pound of weed can cost up to $1500, but if you buy medical marijuana at wholesale prices, then that cost can get as low as $500 to $900, quality dependent.

How many grams in a pound of weed?

A pound of weed equals to 448 grams of weed or 16 ounces of weed, it’s 4 QPs of weed or 2 half pounds of weed. The actual weed measurement for a pound of weed in grams equals 453 grams, but since an ounce of weed is commonly considered to be 28 grams, the pound variant is rounded down to 448 grams. Most online dispensaries will throw a bit extra in to make up for that loss, after all, no one likes a short pound of weed, or any short in their order for that matter.

How much does a pound of weed cost?

If you are a chronic weed smoker, then buying a pound of weed is a normal occurrence for you and can be expensive if you don’t shop at the right dispensaries. Buying marijuana in bulk can more or less only be done online if you want to get a reasonable price. A pound of weed online can cost between $900 to $2500 depending on the quality of the weed and where you buy it.

The Chronic Beaver works with many online dispensaries of all types, here my top recommendations to buy wholesale marijuana online.

What are the legal possession limits of weed in Canada?

Legal Cannabis in Canada RegulationsPossession limits for recreational weed in Canada.

The cannabis possession laws for recreational cannabis across Canada vary from province to province. But, the legal amounts of dried cannabis that you can have on you in public are the same Canada wide, at any given time you are legally allowed to have up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (just 2 grams over an ounce).

The amounts of cannabis that you can legally possess at home are different from province to province. For example in BC, you can have up to 1000 grams at home, that’s almost 36 ounces or just about 2.25 pounds. In Ontario, there is no limit of recreational weed that you can legally have at home.

CTV has a great tool that filters the legal cannabis limits and laws by province.
